How Matka is Made

The ancient art of pottery craftsmanship

1

Clay Selection

High-quality clay is carefully selected from riverbanks or clay deposits. The clay is tested for plasticity, porosity, and mineral content to ensure the best quality matka.

2

Clay Preparation

The clay is cleaned, removing impurities like stones and organic matter. It's then mixed with water and kneaded to achieve the right consistency and plasticity.

3

Shaping

Skilled artisans use pottery wheels or hand-forming techniques to shape the clay into the desired matka form. This requires years of experience and expertise.

4

Drying

The shaped matkas are left to dry in shade for 24-48 hours. This removes moisture gradually and prevents cracking during the firing process.

5

Firing

The dried matkas are fired in kilns at temperatures between 800-1000°C. This process gives the clay its strength and characteristic reddish-brown color.

6

Finishing

After cooling, the matkas are inspected for quality. Some may receive decorative treatments or glazing for specific purposes or aesthetic appeal.
